This is Dawlish Warren. It is a lovely place to visit on holiday. Nearby Dawlish and Starcross suffered a lot of sea induced damage in the recent storms, but they are getting back to normal ready for the Easter holidays. http://www.dawlishwarren.info/

Entertaining the kids through the holidays
So, Christmas is over. Relatives have been visited, presents have been opened, vast quantities of food have been eaten, and we are left with a mountain of recycling to sort.
There is still a week left until school re-starts so what is everyone up to? We are trying to visit as many soft play centres as we have pre-paid passes for, and then getting through the rest of the day with a combination of playing with toys and watching TV.
Today we managed a walk / cycle around Haldon Forest and took our sandwiches with us, so I'm feeling like a healthy and frugal mum. Only one more week of cheap and active days out to organise!
Send me your ideas for winter holiday fun! x

Crealy Theme Park
We have gotten winter passes for Crealy theme park in Devon and so are here for our third day in a row!
The children have had a brilliant time on rides, rollercoasters and indoor play centres. Us parents are relaxed because the children are happy, so all in all great value for money.
Back to school tomorrow so need to get uniforms sorted, bags packed and children to bed early.

Surviving half-term!
Are you able to get outdoors this week? We're trying our best even if it is for muddy walks and a quick go on the swings. So far we've been to the local park twice (as shown here), Bicton Park, Haldon Forest, and today we somehow found our main trip out was to Tesco's. I need inspiration!!

Babies' first steps!
My youngest child, Harrison, turned one year old last weekend. That year seemed to whoosh past before I noticed, and I did feel a little tinge of sadness that my last baby is now growing up! The day after his birthday he took his first steps and there has been no stopping him since.
The last few days he has stood firmly on his two feet and then gingerly stepped forward until reaching the safety of a wall / chair / mummy. Cue much applause and cuddles!
Here is Harrison enjoying a birthday outing to the Science Museum in London. Thanks to a tip from old friends we discovered the somewhat hidden 'garden' area in the basement with loads of sensory activities for curious little people. This wall has different textures for the children to touch - including the feel of wellies!
Apparently letting your child be barefoot helps them to steady themselves ready for standing and walking, which is a good thing as Harrison has a tendency to shed socks given half a chance.
How did your baby surprise you when he or she turned one?

Day out in Haldon Forest
Some good friends suggested a visit to Haldon Forest near to Exeter. Our family spent the afternoon there yesterday and had a fantastic time. The place has no entry fee although there is a car park charge of £3/£4. Haldon Forest has several hiking and cycling trails, adventure activities, children's playgrounds and a cafe. We took the easiest trail of 1.5 miles and found it was easy to push the pushchair through. Our eldest child managed to cycle almost the whole way around, and our 2 year old enjoyed running through the forest with a stick.
The kids also spent time playing in a little playground whilst we enjoyed a visit to the cafe. All in all a great space to enjoy family time with kids of all ages. We'll be back!

Beautiful Sidmouth
We're lucky to live near to Sidmouth so we can regularly pop down to the beach, enjoy the cafes and browse the independent shops. The beach is pebbly so shoes are needed, but we had a lovely splash in the sea to cool down.
The children love discovering unusual pebbles and digging with their spades. This kind of beach is a bit hazardous for our 8 month old baby, but he enjoyed a snack in the shade of his pushchair, followed by being held by Daddy whilst he had a paddle.
We had a good conversation about geology with our inquisitive 4 year old, and selected a special rock for her to take in for her to 'show and tell' at pre-school.
A visit to Sidmouth is not complete without a visit to the premier ice-cream shop and cafe 'Taste': http://www.tasteofsidmouth.co.uk/

National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth
Last weekend we visited the National Marine Aquarium at Plymouth harbour. It was our third visit - you can return for free throughout the year after buying your first ticket. To do this you need to bring a passport photo for each person so check out the terms and conditions on their website before going (http://www.national-aquarium.co.uk). You also get 10% off by booking online, plus much faster entry.
As you can see from the pictures it was a rainy day, and I would highly recommend it as an all weather activity. For each visit we've spent about half a day in the aquarium and then also had a walk around the harbour, by the famous Mayflower steps.
Inside the aquarium is set over several levels with some fantastic deep tanks where you can sit and watch sharks swim past. There are endless educational displays and it is a fascinating day out for all ages. I really have nothing to say on the marine life, so clearly I learned very little :-)
There are lots of activities aimed at small children, and helpful stools for them to climb on to get a better look. Although virtually every family in the place had a pushchair, there are a few parts which are less pushchair friendly as you have to take a lift up and down. The majority of the place is accessed via a sloping walkway making it much easier to get around.
There is a playcentre in the cafe which is immediately in front of you when you arrive. It's a great idea, but can be a bit stressful as it is overcrowded with not enough cafe space for all of the waiting parents. If you can possibly avoid eating at the aquarium I would. There isnt an obvious indoor picnic space and the cafe is too small and fairly expensive. There are loads of lovely cafes in the nearby harbour.
All in all a great experience. Like most family day trips, it could be expensive if you go once, but if you live in Devon and can repeat the visit then it is great value for money.

Ideas for bank hol / half term
At the time of writing it's Friday night and the beginning of the half term holiday. Luckily we have a bank holiday weekend as well so a bit more time away from work. Even more luckily we live in Devon, so there is no shortage of things to do!
We're hoping to drive down to Torquay to venture on to the beach and then take the boat across the bay to Brixham. We'll probably make it to Bicton Park and Escot, plus we have 2 play dates arranged. Time to make the sandwiches and try and save some money :-)
What are your plans this weekend? Write your ideas below....

Exmouth Beach and Fun Park
For a sunny day in the Easter holidays the family headed to Exmouth beach. It was still a chilly 8 or 9 degrees and quite windy, but you can't beat sand, a bucket and spade for little kids. We spent the afternoon at Exmouth because as well as being a naturally beautiful place it also has a Fun Park which the children enjoy (http://www.exmouthfunpark.co.uk/)
Exmouth fun park has a load of different activities. You buy tokens from the kiosk (50p each) and most things cost 2 or 3 tokens per child.
There are trampolines, small motorcars, pedal boats, a bouncy castle, a little train ride, an adventure playground and much more. The kiosk sells snacks, drinks and ice creams and there are about 3 other cafes within a few minutes walk.
We spent loads of lovely days out at Exmouth last summer and are looking forward to the good weather returning properly so we can have more fun at the beach. All in all, it's an ideal place for our kids - currently aged 5 months to 4 years.

Days out in Devon: Bicton Park
For Easter Sunday we spent the whole day at Bicton Park in East Devon (www.bictongardens.co.uk)
We have an annual ticket for the whole family which costs £45. Family day entry is £24.95 (under 3's free), so if you're going more than once then it is worth getting the membership. The membership also lets you in to Morwellham Quay near Tavistock. Bicton is open all year round.
There is a lovely train ride around the park which lasts approx 25 mins. It's a great way to see the gardens and is a must for small children. It costs £1.50 per person.
We spent a good 5 hours at Bicton today, despite having been there many times before. This is a long time to spent out for us with 3 children under the age of 5, so gives you an idea of how popular it was! There are 2 outdoor playgrounds, some little cottages to play in, as well as an indoor play centre. During the weekends and holidays there is a bouncy castle inside the play centre and that was particularly popular with our eldest child.
As part of the Easter activities Bicton had provided us with a treasure hunt and so we got explore the park grounds looking for numbered Easter bunnies. This provided plenty of entertainment as it took us to corners of the park that we hadn't been to before. We were given little bags of mini eggs on our way in so we dished those out to the children once the treasure hunt was completed.
I'd definitely recommend Bicton to families living in or visiting Devon, and I'm sure we'll be back there again during this Easter break. Thanks for reading...

There is a cafe / restaurant which serves a variety of meals at average prices. There are picnic areas but they are all outdoors, so we chose to get something from the cafe today. Thankfully it was beautiful sunshine, but sadly still only highs of 6 degrees!

Days out in Devon: Morwellham Quay
As the Easter holidays are upon us I'm writing about some of the great things there are to do in Devon. Whether you live here in Devon or are planning to visit for a holiday hopefully this will be of some help. For more days out please check out a useful blog I'm following at www.devon-mummy.blogspot.com
Morwellham Quay http://www.morwellham-quay.co.uk/

Our family has a season ticket to Bicton Park in East Devon, and the ticket also gives us free entry to Morwellham, so we thought we'd give it a try. Day entry is otherwise £7.95 adult, £3.95 for children (under 3's free), or family ticket for £24.95.
There is also a Victorian costume room where you could try on period outfits. For the little ones there is a playground right next to the entrance which our children loved, and which we had to eventually drag them away from. We enjoyed a tasty and reasonably priced meal at the Ship Inn restaurant on-site and felt welcome there as a family (ie I was breast-feeding the baby and my 2 older ones were noisy!). There are also picnic tables outside if you want to bring your own food.

Morwellham is on the border between Devon and Cornwall, near to Tavistock. It is the site of a former copper mine and so has a range of related activities. We all enjoyed a great day, despite the weather. It was a dry day but FREEZING cold, yet the children all had a lovely time and we spent 4 hours there. We visited the cottages which used to belong to miners, saw the former school, looked at one of the boats used to transport the copper and learned about the former history of the place.

The main feature of the day is a ride on the mine train (tickets £3.50). I wasnt sure whether this would be too scary or long for the children, but all 3 were fine (aged between 5 months and 4 years). The ride took 45 mins in total, but there was quite a bit of stopping and starting. Firstly the train went along the riverside and the driver stopped to talk about the past use of the mine. Then the train entered the mine where some audio description was played and lights showed several dioramas of miners at work.
Parents be warned: it was very dark inside the mine, and the train was also extremely noisy as it rattled through the mine. However, I cuddled my children close and they were fine with it all. Afterwards my eldest talked about how much fun it was. We'll definitely be going back in warmer weather as there was more that we could have seen and done.

What do you do with your kids whilst it's raining?

I can personally recommend Hippychick's waterproof suits for children. They come in sizes for ages 1 to 4 years. My eldest two each have one, so they didnt get their clothes covered in mud whilst digging today.
You can get Hippychick's latest packasuit from our website (www.serenity-baby.co.uk). Please share your ideas for rainy days or cute pics of your kids. Thanks for reading x
